Cancun, Q.R. — A Cancun police officer is under investigation for the shooting of a young male early Sunday morning. According to the Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE) de Quintana Roo, the unnamed officer was arrested Sunday for injuring a youth with a firearm.
According to a briefing by the Fiscalía General del Estado, “an investigation was opened against an element of this autonomous body who was arrested for injuring a person by firing a firearm after having a discussion.
“The injured man was taken to a hospital and is reported to be non-serious. The head of the Prosecutor’s Office, Mr. Óscar Montes de Oca, endorses his commitment to zero impunity and that no person is above the law.”
The shooting reportedly took place during the early morning hours of Sunday when several youths were leaving a concert at Plaza de Toros. Cancun police officer Cristhian “M”, was allegedly waiting by the vehicle of a specific person with whom he had had an argument with earlier that day.
The injured is reported to be a 17 year old male. Police responding to the report of the 2:00 a.m. Sunday morning shooting arrived at the scene where they located Cristhian “M”, who at the time of his arrest, identified himself as an active officer. He was off duty at the time.
In a news briefing late Sunday morning, the FGE confirmed the arrested gunman was a Cancun police officer. At the time of his arrest, he was found in possession of a firearm. The FGE did not comment on possible charges.
