Cancun Police confirm arrests and identify pair in hotel zone jet ski accident

Cancun, Q.R. — Cancun police have confirmed the arrests of two men responsible for a recent jet ski accident that sent five to hospital. The two men were reported taken into custody by Cancun Tourist Police from the scene Sunday evening.

On Monday, Cancun Police confirmed the arrests of two men said responsible for the accident that left five hospitalized. In custody is 35 year old Mateo “N” and 36 year old José “N”. Both are facing assault charges.

“Cancun police officers arrested two men for their alleged involvement in an assault that occurred at kilometer nine of Kukulcán Boulevard,” they reported in a briefing Monday.

“Mateo “N”, 35, and José “N”, 36, were allegedly involved in a jet ski incident that resulted in injuries to several people,” they added.

“The incident took place at Playa Gaviota Azul where officers were called to the scene after receiving a report of an accident involving watercraft. The suspects were turned over to the State Attorney General’s Office, which will determine their legal status and continue the investigation,” Policía de Cancún said.

According to new information, the pair entered a buoyed swimming area of Playa Gaviota Azul with the jet ski they had rented Sunday evening. There are allegations that they were impaired at the time, however, police did not confirm that information in their Monday statement.

Antonio Riveroll, the Director of Cancun Civil Protection, clarified that it will be up to the Port Authority to review the permits and, if necessary, fine the company that allegedly rented them the jet ski while they were impaired.

On Sunday, five people were taken to hospital after an out-of-control jet ski slammed into a group of swimmers. The accident happened off a beach in the Cancun Hotel Zone.

One of those injured is reported to be in critical condition. In their Monday briefing, Cancun Police did not say which of the two men was operating the jet ski at the time of the incident.
