Cancun pair booked on human trafficking charges

Cancun, Q.R. — A man and woman have been booked on human trafficking charges in Cancun. On Monday, María Elvira “H” and Juan Carlos “M” were arrested on an outstanding warrant, according to the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE).

The pair, who remain jailed in Cancun, were taken into custody by agents of Trafficking and the Exploitation of Girls, Boys and Adolescents on prostitution charges to the detriment of at least two victims.

“The defendants, María Elvira “H” and Juan Carlos “M”, who took advantage of their family closeness to the victims to commit the crime, were arrested with the support of the Coordination Group for the Construction of Peace and Security of Quintana Roo in Cancun,” the state agency reported.

According to the FGE, “since 2003, when at the time one of the victims was 12 years old, María Elvira “H” forced her to have relationships with her then boyfriend sentimental partner in exchange for money.

“The second case was exposed on April 23 of this year when an adolescent told authorities that María Elvira “H” and Juan Carlos “M”, the new boyfriend of María Elvira “H”, have forced her into prostitution since for seven years.”

The agency added that they are investigating if the older sister of the adolescent is also a victim.

The two known victims remain in the care of the Protection of Children and Adolescents and the DIF family protection system of Cancun.
