Cancun officer recovering after machete attack

Cancun, Q.R. — A Cancun police officer continues to recover after being attacked with a machete Saturday night. In the attack, the officer lost three fingers. The assault happened when the officer responded to a report of a family dispute inside a private home in Paraíso Maya de Cancun.

Once at the Cenote Lagarto de Oro Street address, the municipal officer was met by a man in his 40s who was armed with a full length machete. While attempting to talk to the seated man, the man continually threatened to cut his own neck with the machete as he waved it in the air toward his head.

A family member standing behind the officer videoed the moment the armed man got up to confront the officer, who had his weapon drawn. In an instant, the man stood up and threw the machete at the officer, who fired.

The multi-second video shows the man fall to the ground inside the home and the officer exit the house with a trail of blood behind him.

During the attack, the Cancun officer identified as Serafin “S”, lost two fingers on his left hand and one on his right. The shot man, who has not been identified, died at the scene.
