Cancun officer investigated after arrest for carrying service weapon in private vehicle

Cancun, Q.R. — A Cancun police officer is being investigated after he was found in a private vehicle in uniform packing his weapon. The corporation’s Internal Affairs Directorate began the investigation after he was detained by Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional (Sedena) personnel.

According to early information, the unidentified Municipal Police officer left his assigned workplace in uniform and with his weapon and was later found traveling in a private vehicle.

José Pablo Mathey Cruz, the Municipal Secretary of Public Security and Traffic, confirmed one of the municipal officers was detained by Sedena personnel. He was taken into legal custody after being found with his service gun inside a private car.

The officer has since been placed at the disposal of the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic (FGR) for the improper use of his weapon after abandoning a fixed surveillance point that he was assigned.

“This person leaves his post saying that he is going to dinner, but he leaves in a private car, he leaves in uniform, he had some people with him in a civilian vehicle which was an ostentatious vehicle.

“Sedena stops him, does the inspection and in fact, he does not have the document that accredits him to carry a weapon at that moment. The weapon is for a specific service, not for walking on the street, so for that reason he was detained by Sedena.

“The database is consulted and he is effectively an active element and he does not have the right to carry the weapon on board that vehicle,” Mathey Cruz explained.

The municipal officer is being investigated by the FGR as well as by the corporation’s Internal Affairs Directorate for abandoning duty and carrying a corporation firearm outside the authorized area.
