Cancun neighbor dispute over dog leaves home up in flames

Cancun, Q.R. — A dispute between neighbors in the Paseos Nité neighborhood is being blamed for a house fire. On Monday night, Cancun firemen were notified of the fire after a heated exchange of words between neighbors.

The fire was reported around 8:00 p.m. when a Molotov cocktail was thrown at the front of the home on Yunuen Street. Occupants from inside the home were seen running out the front door through the flames.

According to initial reports, the situation began when the owner of the affected home asked his neighbor to stop letting her dog defecate at his front door. The conversation quickly escalated to include physical threats with a machete against the female owner of the dog.

In retaliation, the dog-owner allegedly had a lit Molotov cocktail thrown at the home. The home owner claims the woman asked another person to carry out the attack in retaliation.

The two minors who were inside the house when the fire started were able to get out.

Officers from the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) along with Cancun police were at the home Monday night in response to the 9-1-1 report. The affected party is expected to file a formal complaint with the Attorney General of the State (FGE) so an investigation can be initiated and responsibility determined.
