Cancun judge orders members of Cancun vehicle theft ring to remain imprisoned

Cancun, Q.R. — Two members of a vehicle theft ring in Cancun have been ordered to remain jailed. The pair were picked up separately after being found in possession of a stolen motorcycle.

Local authorities say the pair are part of a criminal group known for vehicle thefts in the city. “The Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Vehicle and Transportation Theft obtained the prosecution of two male persons,” the State Attorney General (FGE) reported.

The detained are Gerardo “N” and Gabriel “N”, who are accused of the violent robbery of a motorcycle. The Cancun victim filed a complaint which lead to their arrests.

“Gerardo “N” was captured on the streets of SM 512, in possession of a motorcycle with a current theft report, while Gabriel “N” was arrested in the Rancho Viejo neighborhood in the mainland area of Isla Mujeres. According to initial investigations, the two subjects are part of a criminal group dedicated to vehicle theft,” the FGE added.

Authorities did not say if the pair are believed involved in other vehicle thefts around the city or if they are being investigated for other possible involvement.

A Cancun judge imposed the precautionary measure of justified preventive detention for a period of two years or the duration of the proceedings.
