Cancun Hotel Zone gas leak sees 500 evacuated

Cancun, Q.R. — The strong smell of gas from a hotel under construction in the Cancun Hotel Zone forced the evacuation of nearly 500 people Monday afternoon.

According to information from Emergency 911, the incident happened at 2:00 p.m. at a new Canopy by Hilton hotel that is currently under construction along Kukulkan Boulevard in the Cancun Hotel Zone. The smell of gas was registered at kilometer 12.5 where emergency personnel arrived in response to the call.

Members of the Cancun fire department, Civil Protection and Quintana Roo Police arrived to evacuate the site. Some hotel construction workers reported other workers requiring treatment after breathing in gas from the 5,000-liter tank.

Authorities were quick to control the gas leak without incident, noting that about 10 people were attended to for minor issues.
