Cancun fishermen benefiting from self-consumption permits

Cancun, Riviera Maya, Q.R. — In Cancun, around a hundred boats will take advantage of the express fishing permits for self-consumption that, due to the health contingency, were granted by the Port Authority in coordination with the National Aquaculture and Fisheries Commission.

Ricardo Muleiro López, former president of Nautical Associates of Quintana Roo said that the personal consumption fishing rules applied to Cancun fishermen are similar to that of Puerto Morelos. He said that the number of crew will depend on the size of the boat and that catch is subject to a maximum of five per person.

“All boats, even if they were for nautical tourism, under current conditions can have a permit processed as long as they have their maritime security certificate and current insurance,” he said adding that “with that, they can do self-consumption fishing.”

A similar program has been extended to fishermen at Puerto Morelos. Coordination between federal agencies the local Port Authority and the City Council have laid out rules for local fishermen who wish to fish for personal consumption.

Puerto Morelos mayor Laura Fernández Piña points out that the authorization does not apply to luxury vessels and is subject to provisions such as respect for closed species and protected areas. She said that local fishermen can be granted permission upon request of a personal permit before the Conapesca and Captaincy of the Port.

“Without a doubt, it is good news that can give relief to the economy of tourism service providers and fishermen in the face of the possibility that they can obtain food from the sea, strictly for family consumption and not for marketing,” stressed the mayor.
