Cancun firemen say large tire fire finally under control

Cancun, Q.R. — A large tire fire that started in an old Cancun dump is finally under control. The fire started Thursday afternoon in an old landfill in Rancho Viejo. For more than two days, hundreds of tires have been burning.

Enormous clouds of thick black smoke can still be seen coming from the old dump. However, Cancun firemen say the fire is under finally control and nearly extinguished.

Cancun Fire Director Aquileo Alvarez says the fire is currently 90 percent under control. He says eight trucks from the Cancun and Isla Mujeres fire stations were used along with water trucks from Aguakan and municipal public services.

Alvarez reported 40 members of Civil Protection and firefighters from Isla Mujeres and Cancun have been working to put out the fire and that emergency crews remain on site to prevent the fire from starting up again.

He said while they do not know the exact cause of the fire, they suspect the extremely high temperatures.
