Cancun firemen combat blaze that consumed entire building

Cancun, Q.R. — An overnight building fire in the city of Cancun spread to a nearby palapa, firemen said Wednesday. Emergency personnel were requested in SM 247 Tuesday night after nearby neighbors saw flames.

Nearly two dozen firefighters battled the large blaze near Kabah Avenue that had spread to a palapa. The fire was reported to authorities around 8:30 p.m. Residents of the Rinconadas del Mar subdivision reported the Tuesday night fire who witnessed smoke that very quickly burst into flames.

City police were first on scene followed closely by the local fire department. Arriving firemen immediately began the task of extinguishing the roaring blaze that had completely engulfed the building.

Due to its size, authorities evacuated residents due to the imminent risk of the fire spreading even further. Emergency services from the neighboring municipality of Isla Mujeres also arrived to assist Cancun firemen.

Nearly two dozen firemen worked to put out the building fire January 13, 2026.

Two private water trucks were brought in to aid in the battle which, according to the Cancun fire department, did not result in any injuries. The building was used to store hotel equipment. An official cause for the fire remains under investigation.

“Fire brought under control in SM 247,” Cancun Civil Protection said late Tuesday. “Our personnel, in coordination with the Fire Department, successfully controlled a fire involving hotel equipment that also spread to a nearby palapa.

“Following the incident, it was confirmed that no one was injured, and a preventative inspection of the area is ongoing to ensure safety.”
