Cancun fire department responds to report of burning LP gas truck

Cancun, Q.R. — Cancun firemen were quick to respond to the report of a burning LP gas delivery truck Friday. The vehicle was found pulled over on the side of the highway southwest of the city.

The gas truck caught fire Friday afternoon southwest of the city May 8, 2026.

The incident happened Friday afternoon as the driver was traveling the federal highway. Along his route, the truck’s engine began to smoke. Within minutes, the fire had spread to the cab.

The driver called 9-1-1 emergency services who sent the Cancun fire department to his location. The Cancun Fire Department said they were able to extinguish the fire before it reached the gas tank, however, they were not able to save the vehicle.

National Guard Highways closed the road in both directions until the situation was deemed fully under control. There were no injuries reported.

“Cancun Fire Department personnel responded to a fire in an LP gas tanker truck on the Cancun-Leona Vicario highway,” they reported in a briefing.

“Upon arrival, personnel located a fire in the cab of the unit. They immediately carried out firefighting and cooling operations, successfully controlling the situation and eliminating any risks.

“No injuries were reported.

“The fire caused total damage to the cab of the unit. The operation was carried out in coordination with Cancun Civil Protection, the National Guard, and personnel from the gas company. Preventative measures were maintained at the site until the safe removal of the unit.”
