Cancun excluded from list of Cinemex theaters reopening across the country

Cancun, Q.R. — After being shut for months, Cinemex has announced it will reopen nearly half of its theaters across 28 states in the country. As of May 26, 153 of Cinemex’s 333 theaters will reopen to the public.

The agency says that their premier movie will be Cruella, with a list of other films for upcoming days listed on the website.

Rogelio Vélez, the general director of Cinemex announced that as of May 26, 153 of the 333 movie theater will reopen across 28 states. He said tickets will available for purchase online for the opened theaters, which includes Playa del Carmen but not Cancun.

“The reopening will take place in 28 states of the Republic in those places where we believe that conditions have improved significantly, according to the lights and authorities of each entity,” said the CEO of Cinemex.

Given this, he explained that they will begin with the premiere of Cruella since it is one of the most anticipated films of the year.

“We have had to restructure what we have, now we will come out with a stronger company, stronger with the 25 years of experience we have in entertainment…and we hope we do not have to close again.”

He also said that people are under the impression movie theaters are not as popular as they once were now that movies can be watched at home. Vélez noted that watching a movie in a theatre is not the same as watching one in your living room.

“In 2019, $42 billion USD was generated worldwide, while in Mexico, 350 million guests were registered, which positioned our country number 4 in the world with the highest profit, followed by China, the United States and India,” added Vélez.
