Cancun combi driver to lose public transport license for serious pedestrian violation

Cancun, Q.R. — A Cancun combi driver had his unit towed Monday after being reported for parking in a bike lane. The unidentified public driver was videoed for pulling off a main road and onto a marked bike lane where he stopped to chat on his phone.

In doing so, he forced a bicyclist to have to leave the bike path and use the busy road to go around him. That video was posted to social media.

Personnel from the Quintana Roo Mobility Institute (Imoveqroo) were quick to attend to the scene where they located the combi. Rodrigo Alcázar Urrutia, the General Director of Imoveqroo, said the Mobility Institute condemned the driver’s actions.

The driver was fined and his unit towed. According to Alcázar Urrutia, the driver will also lose his public license.

“We applied the corresponding sanction to the unit and it was sent to the corralón. He will not be able to circulate until he pays his violation, in addition to the fact that the driver will face a procedure and his public service license will be definitively canceled,” he explained.

A detailed report will be drawn up to impose a serious infraction because this type of maneuver puts pedestrians at risk, he added.

A call has been made to all operators and concessionaires to respect traffic regulations and be aware of the importance of cycle lanes and pedestrian areas. Road safety is a shared responsibility and we will not tolerate actions that put the safety of citizens at risk, Alcázar said in a statement.
