Cancun authorities stumble upon multiple murder site after 9-1-1 reports

Cancun, Q.R. — UPDATED: Cancun police were at the scene of multiple murder site Thursday morning after numerous motorists reports. Drivers spotted the dead body of a man on the side of the federal highway near the Cancun-Puerto Morelos municipal border.

Emergency services received numerous 9-1-1 reports about the dead body sighting. When police arrived, they located one deceased adult male laying in a dirt area off the side of the highway at the bottom of an overpass.

They also arrived to find a man handling the dead body. The unidentified man, who claimed he was a friend of the deceased, was taken into police custody for allegedly stealing items from within the dead man’s clothing. There have been local reports that he could also have been involved in the murders.

Since the man was found deceased, municipal officers requested the presence of the FGE (Fiscalía General del Estado) who arrived and began to collect evidence. While searching the area, FGE (State Attorney General) personnel found three more bodies.

All three were adult males and only meters from the first reported body. All three had been shot and were found together in an area of dirt road near where the initial body was found off the highway. All four men are between the ages of 30 and 40. They were all found fully clothed and with bullet wounds to the head and chest.

One of the bodies found has been reported to be that of a municipal police officer. Authorities reinforced security in the area after the 7:00 a.m. discovery Thursday morning.

UPDATE: The State Attorney General has confirmed the discovery of four dead men along a section of highway outside Cancun in the direction of Puerto Morelos. They have also confirmed one of the deceased was an active municipal police officer on disability leave.

In a statement, the FGE said “the Attorney General’s Office (FGE) reports the arrest of a person, against whom an investigation was opened for the crime of qualified homicide against four men, including a member of the municipal police who was on disability.

“The incident occurred in the municipality of Benito Juárez. The first lines of investigation indicate that this event would be related to human trafficking and a settling of scores between members of criminal groups.”
