Cancun apartment gas explosion sends two to hospital

Cancun, Q.R. — Two people from inside an apartment were taken to Cancun hospital Sunday after their LP gas tank exploded. The two family members were rushed to hospital with burns due to the gas blast.

Cancun firefighters were at the apartment complex in SM 251 of Cancun Sunday afternoon in response to neighbor 9-1-1 reports of the explosion. The accident happened inside a second floor unit on Isla Virginia Street in the Paseos del Mar subdivision.

According to Cancun fire department personnel, the explosion originated in a laundry room of approximately two square meters due to a gas accumulation. The fire was controlled by residents using water and a fire extinguisher.

The explosion caused significant structural damage, blowing out three windows and dislodging an iron guard that was thrown five meters from the window. Firefighters removed a 10 kilo gas tank from the apartment.

Apartment resident Santiago “S” was taken to hospital with first degree burns on his foot, back and shoulder, while Guadalupe “S”, 54, suffered blunt force trauma to her arms. Both were rushed to Cancun hospital by ambulance.
