Cancun and Tulum top Mexico destination choices for international female travelers

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Cancun and Tulum are two of the top Mexico preferences for international female travelers. According to the Ministry of Tourism, the two Quintana Roo cities were part of the country’s four favorite destinations during 2024.

Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, the Secretary of Tourism, says Tulum leads the national ranking with 59 percent of female travel preferences, while the city of Cancun follows behind closely with 53.7 percent.

The two cities were ranked highly for their friendly and safe travel experiences. According to Rodríguez, Tulum in particular stands out as the most popular destination with 59 percent of its international tourist made up of single female travelers.

Tulum was followed by Oaxaca with 53.8 percent and Cancun with 53.7 percent. Single female travelers heading to Mexico also favored Los Cabos with 53.4 percent.

Regarding the top positions of Cancun and Tulum, “this confirms the growing trend of female tourism in the state, who seek not only relaxation, but authentic and safe experiences,” Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama said.

“In this New Era of Tourism, Quintana Roo destinations have a more inclusive, responsible and women-friendly approach,” Lezama said, “in addition to offering experiences that range from well-being and relaxation to adventure and culture, all in a safe and respectful environment.”

According to a statement from the Ministry of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, in the first 11 months of 2024, 10.2 million international female travelers arrived in Mexico by air, which represents an increase of 2.4 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.

More than half of those travelers chose destinations in Quintana Roo, consolidating the state as one of the most visited places by female travelers. Josefina Rodríguez said that according to the Ministry of the Interior (SEGOB), women represent 51.1 percent of the total number of international tourists arriving in Mexico by plane.
