Cancun, Q.R. — A Canadian man was found dead in his Cancun home Sunday with what police are saying was “with violence”.
The discovery was made Sunday morning by a friend in SM 20 of Cancun. The deceased has been identified as 62-year-old Daniel Lavoie, a former honorary consul in Mexico. Local media report that the body was found bound with a message alleging he was a child rapist, however, local authorities have not confirmed this information.
Quintana Roo police have said that Lavoie held the position of Canadian consul a decade ago. The attorney general’s office declined to provide a possible motive, saying only that they have launched an investigation.
According to Global News, the Canadian consular office has made a statement saying, “Consular officials are in contact with local authorities to gather additional information. Due to the provisions under the Privacy Act, no further information can be disclosed.”
Lavoie was a resident of Cancun for 33 years. He taught English.
