Cancun, Q.R. — Rescue teams tried to put out a fire on a boat Sunday morning, however, despite efforts, the boat was consumed by flames. Other boaters videoed the small vessel engulfed in flames near the Calinda Bridge in the hotel zone of Cancun.
The Sunday morning boat fire appears to have started in the engine. Rescue teams from other boats tried desperately to put out the fire, but the fire was too advanced. Elements from the Cancun Fire Department and Tourist Police attended the scene but were unable to do much to save it.
The boat began to burn near the bridge at kilometer 4.5 of the Cancun Hotel Zone and quickly spread. Light winds also helped fan flames, which were well underway by the time the fire department arrived.
According to local authorities, there were no injuries. The owner of the boat was on board when the engine began to smoke. He tried to put it out himself, however, when the smoke turned to flames, he was forced to jump into the sea from where he was picked up by other boaters.
The small private boat was completely consumed by the fire. Civil Protection and Cancun firemen are continuing with their investigation into an official cause.
