Cancun, Q.R. — UPDATED: A man died Sunday night after allegedly jumping from an overpass near the Cancun International Airport. Police and medical personnel attended to the scene just before 8:00 p.m. after someone made a 911 report of a man threatening to throw himself from the bridge.
Preliminary reports say the man jumped from the overpass at the entrance of the airport and was then hit by a truck upon landing on the pavement below.
The area was cordoned off while authorities investigated. Two lanes were closed to traffic during that time. The man has been tentatively identified as Johncox N. He was originally reported to be from Great Britain, but an update from authorities has revealed he was from Canada.
UPDATE: Local authorities have officially identified the deceased man as 61-year-old J.V.M. from Canada. In a brief statement, the Attorney General reported the man was identified by his passport. There was no family with him at the time of the incident.
Emergency services was notified of the accident when “a witness managed to see the subject sitting on the edge of the bridge moments before he jumped.” A review of city surveillance cameras confirmed the jump. Additional details have not been released.
