Cancun, Q.R. — A female swimmer was pronounced dead by likely drowning on a Cancun Hotel Zone beach Sunday. The woman, who has not been named, was seen floating off a beach area near kilometer 8.5 of Kukulcan Boulevard.

Emergency services were notified of the floating body shortly after 6:00 p.m. off Playa Gaviota Azul. Beachgoers rushed out to return her to the sand where they performed CPR while waiting for an ambulance.
Lifeguards from a nearby station arrived as did a paramedics from a responding ambulance. The female swimmer was pronounced dead at the scene. The deceased has only been identified as a 50 year old woman. Her nationality is not known.
Antonio Riveroll, the Director of Civil Protection Cancun, reported that the incident occurred in an area used by a private condominium, which, according to him, is responsible for beach surveillance in that area of the Federal Maritime Land Zone.

He also said that at 5:00 p.m. , that Cancun beach was red flagged due to an increase in strong winds.
