Body of Cancun canoeist reported missing at sea recovered during search

Cancun, Q.R. — An elderly man died in Cancun Saturday while canoeing near Playa Langosta. The unidentified man is believed to have drowned after tipping his canoe.

The man was reportedly training for the the traditional Mayan Crossing with a group off Playa Langosta in the Cancun Hotel Zone at the time of the incident. Emergency 9-1-1 was notified Saturday morning after he was reported missing at sea.

Others he was with reported seeing his canoe hit by a strong wave which caused it to capsize. The man then disappeared from his boat. Emergency personnel began a search and rescue mission which turned into a search and recovery after they found his lifeless body.

His body was recovered after he was reported missing at sea Saturday morning. October 26, 2024.

The man, who has not been named, was found near an area called as Jardín del Arte. Despite efforts to revive him, was pronounced dead by responding paramedics. Local authorities carried out the pertinent procedures for the removal of the body. An autopsy will determine the official cause of death.
