Cancun, Q.R. — At least three people were killed Saturday evening in a boat crash on the Nichupte Lagoon. According to early reports, two boats collided on the lagoon in the Cancun Hotel Zone around 5:00 p.m. Saturday.
Search efforts for those missing were started Saturday shortly after 911 received the emergency call at 6:00 p.m., but rescue teams quickly ran out of daylight. At least three of the boat’s passengers were reported missing as of Saturday night.
The body of one person was found shortly after the accident Saturday. A second body was located Sunday morning. A third body was found Sunday afternoon and pulled from lagoon waters.
The only survivor told authorities their a boat of five headed out Saturday evening to go fishing. Along the way, they were hit by another vessel. He was able to swim to the dock of Aquaworld and request help.
Search and rescue teams located the body of one person Saturday just before dark. The discovery of two more bodies Sunday was confirmed by Guillermo Núñez, the General Director of State Civil Protection.
“We are in a search and rescue operation for one more person,” he said Sunday regarding the five who were on the boat. The boat was heading for Laguna del Amor when they were struck by another vessel.
Their boat sank. There was no information released on the second vessel involved. The search for the last body will resume Monday.
