Authorities investigating late night exchange between city officer and known drug dealer

Cancun, Q.R. — Authorities have begun an internal investigation into what appears to be a city officer accepting a bribe. In a home video, a Cancun police officer is captured pulling up in front of a private house from where a waiting man hands him what is believed to be protection money.

The officer quickly leaves the dark street followed by a second police motorcycle unit. The home where the exchange was made is reported to be a known drug house.

Cancun officials were made aware of the exchange after the home video was posted to social media. The alleged bribe took place outside a private home earlier this week in the Villas Otoch Paraíso subdivision of SM 259.

In the 24-second video, the number on the city-issued motorcycle unit, driven by an officer with his face covered, is used to identify him. After a review of the video, the Municipal Secretariat for Citizen Security and Traffic (SMSCyT) issued a statement saying the case has been transferred to the Internal Affairs Directorate.

“The SMSCyT of Benito Juárez is investigating alleged acts contrary to the guidelines of the corporation after the dissemination of a video on social networks. The case has been referred to the Internal Affairs Directorate to determine responsibilities.”
