Authorities investigating how American tourist ended up in Cancun’s croc-filled Nichupte lagoon

Cancun, Q.R. — Emergency services were requested Thursday after an American tourist ended up in the Nichupte lagoon. The man was found under a pier in the lagoon which is known for its naturally abundant crocodile population.

A rescue boat with medial personnel responded to several reports that were made of a man jumping into the lagoon. Some of those 9-1-1 reports claimed a possible suicide attempt.

The reports were made around noon from the Cancun Hotel Zone by witnesses who watched as the man jumped into the croc-filled water.

The tourist has been identified as 31 year old John “N” from Florida.

Cancun firemen and Civil Protection personnel were first to respond, locating the Florida visitor under a pier. According to authorities, when they reached him, he was aggressive and refused help.

Civil Protection then requested support from the Port Captain who dispatched a boat to retrieve the man from the water.

Hotel Zone Tourist Police were on scene with Civil Protection and an ambulance while waiting for the boat to return.

Authorities reported that the American tourist was pulled from the water and taken to a dock where he was transferred on a stretcher to a private ambulance.

Paramedics indicated that he had superficial neck wounds and was intoxicated, though the substance is unknown.

There are numerous signs warning people not to enter the croc-filled lagoon in the Cancun Hotel Zone.
