Authorities investigating cause of fatal Cancun house fire

Cancun, Q.R. — Authorities are investigating a late night house fire that left one home occupant dead. On Monday night, Cancun firemen arrived to a burning home in SM 208 in response to numerous neighbor reports.

The fire happened in the Hacienda Real del Caribe subdivision. Inside the burning home they located a deceased 16 year old and two other occupants suffering burns. Authorities are investigating after allegations the fire was deliberately set.

Cancun firemen were requested at the home on Calpulalpan Street around 10:00 p.m. Monday night where they arrived to a fully engulfed house.

Neighbors reported a mother and one of her sons were rescued from the home by firemen with third-degree burns. Her second son, a 16 year old teen, was trapped inside the house and died.

Personnel from the Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office arrived to remove the body and gather evidence to determine an official cause for the fatal fire. Authorities are continuing their investigation into Tuesday to determine the exact cause of the incident and find those responsible in the event it was a premeditated attack.

State officials have released a brief statement confirming the fire does not appear to have been intentional. Firemen are investigating a possible electrical failure or gas leak as the cause.

“The FGE reports that it has opened an investigation into the fire that broke out in a home in the Hacienda Real del Caribe subdivision in SM 208 in the municipality of Benito Juárez, where a 16-year-old boy sadly lost his life.

“According to preliminary investigations, no evidence has been found suggesting the presence of explosive or incendiary devices, as has been reported in some media outlets. Current lines of investigation point to a possible short circuit or explosion resulting from gas accumulation.

“Specialized experts from this institution continue analyzing evidence to precisely determine the causes of the fire and clarify the events,” officials said.
