Cancun, Q.R. — Authorities in Cancun continue their search for a lone gunman who shot and killed a prison guard. The shooting happened Friday morning as the female guard was finishing a shift.
The woman had left the Social Rehabilitation Center (Cereso) in SM 99 where she worked and was walking toward a main avenue through a green area when she was attacked.
The deceased guard has been identified as Maricela Jiménez “J”. She was shot at point blank range before her attacker fled on a waiting motorcycle. A handwrittten threat message was left beside the body. The threats were aimed at the Cereso director as well as other prison guards.
The State Attorney General (FGE) has begun an investigation into the murder.
“The FGE reports that it opened an investigation for the events that occurred Friday when a guard at the Benito Juárez Social Reintegration Center was deprived of her life by gunshots.
“The security corporations stationed in this municipality are working in coordination to find the person or persons responsible for this unfortunate event.”
Around the same time, the Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana (SSC) said “a review operation was carried out at the Cancún Penitentiary Center by elements of the State Police and the Navy in order to detect any object not permitted in the facilities of this penitentiary center.
“Everything was kept calm and in order by authorities to guarantee the safety of the inmates as well as the citizens who live in the surrounding area.”
