Cancun, Q.R. — An afternoon operation in the Cancun Hotel Zone caused a stir when police arrived and arrested more than a dozen people. On Thursday, numerous police units were seen parked at Kilometer 12 of the hotel zone where authorities carried out another beach operation.
Police and elements of the National Guard arrived around 1:30 p.m. where they located a group of workers along the beach. From that group, 16 men were taken into custody along with two guns and hundreds of doses of narcotics.
In a briefing, the FGE reported “as part of the strategy of the State Group for the Construction of Peace and Security in QROO, it was possible to secure 16 men, two short weapons and at least 300 doses of marijuana. This, as part of the “Safe Construction” operation in the vicinity of a hotel that is being remodeled in Benito Juárez.”
According to the Chief of Police Lucio Hernández Gutiérrez, the men arrested are believed part of a group that use threats and intimidation against other construction workers for the consumption and trafficking of narcotics as well as the stealing of construction materials.
