Attempted taxi theft ties up Cancun public services for hours

Cancun, Q.R. — Cancun firemen spent several hours Sunday trying to free two men believed stuck inside a PVC pipe. The men ran into the water line system in a bid to escape police arrest for attempted auto theft.

The PVC pipe they ran into is in the process of being laid in a new residential area of Prado Norte. The two men made a run for it after the taxi they stole stalled several meters after they started it.

Area residents who saw the youths steal the taxi tried to stop them, which is when they ran into the pipe. Neighbors called police. When police arrived, the men refused to come out.

After more than four hours of failed attempts to talk them out, firemen were called to Flor de Mayo Avenue to cut the pipe when it was feared they may suffocate inside the plastic water line.

By the time firemen accessed the area of the PVC pipe where the pair were hiding, it was found empty. Both youths are believed to have escaped undetected somewhere along the PVC pipe.
