Cancun, Q.R. — One person has been killed and another left serious in hospital after a head on crash in Cancun. The two car crash happened early Monday morning on the Auto Gas highway where two drivers collided head-on.

Emergency services responding to the Huayacan Avenue accident pronounced the driver of the Volkswagen dead at the scene. The second driver involved was rushed to hospital from the scene at around 1:20 a.m. Monday.

Red Cross paramedics and city firemen were at the scene assisting municipal police after motorists’ reports of the fatal accident. According to early information, the head on collision happened when one car was attempting to pass another. While taking over the slower vehicle in the oncoming lane, the car collided with another vehicle.

The area was cordoned off by city Transit officers who notified the State Attorney General’s Office of a death at the scene. Firemen helped to clear the road of scattered debris. It is not clear which driver was responsible for the deadly head on collision.
