Atlantic records Hurricane Elsa as its first of the 2021 season

Cancun, Riviera Maya Weather — Tropical Storm Elsa has taken on hurricane status as the storm gains power while moving through the Atlantic. On Thursday morning, Elsa was upgraded to a Category 1 hurricane. The now-hurricane is expected to maintain its original path over the Leeward and Windward islands as it heads toward the US state of Florida.

As of Thursday morning, Hurricane Elsa was located 2,973 east-southeast of Cancún and 65 km east of Barbados. The NOAA says the island of Barbados is already experiencing hurricane conditions due to the passing of Elsa.

Hurricane conditions are also possible over southern Hispaniola, Jamaica and Puerto Rico into Saturday. Elsa is expected to downgrade back into a Tropical Storm by early Sunday morning.

Currently, Hurricane Elsa is maintaining 120 km / hour winds and 150 km / hour wind gusts. The Government of Mexico says that Elsa does not pose any danger to the country.
