Approaching tropical wave to soak central-coastal Yucatan Peninsula

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Intense rain is forecast for the Yucatan Peninsula and in particular, the coast of Quintana Roo Saturday afternoon. Heavy rains are expected to begin in Riviera Maya late afternoon Saturday due to tropical wave 19.

Mexico’s Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN) says between 75 mms and 150 mms is possible for the coastal regions of the state of Quintana Roo.

“In the next few hours, tropical wave number 19, which is approaching the Yucatan Peninsula, in interaction with a low pressure channel over the southeast of Mexico and the entry of humid air from the Caribbean Sea, is expected to generate intense rains (75 to 150 millimeters) in the states of Campeche, Chiapas, Yucatan and Quintana Roo,” the meteorological agency reported.

According to the SMN, hail is possible in some areas of the Peninsula due to the mix of humidity from the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea with the approaching tropical wave.

“The entry of humidity from the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, in addition to a new tropical wave approaching the coast of Quintana Roo, will cause very heavy rains, intense lightning and possible hail in the Peninsula,” they said.

“On Sunday, a new tropical wave will enter the Yucatan Peninsula, while on Monday and Tuesday it will move over the southeast, east, center and south of Mexico. Along its path, it will cause heavy to very heavy rains accompanied by electrical storms and possible hail in the aforementioned regions.”
