Cancun, Q.R. — Another 300 military have arrived in the city of Cancun to strengthen security on the heels of summer vacation. The additional manpower arrived in the city Thursday to help reinforce security during the summer holiday season.
The military men and woman will also help patrol other busy destinations including Riviera Maya and Tulum where they will participate in intelligence work of criminal groups.
During a brief meeting with the media prior to their first high crimes area tours of Cancun, the commander of the 34th Military Zone, Roberto Pérez Ceja, indicated that their mission is to carry out planning, operational and intelligence work to strengthen the rule of law.
He explained that the military personnel will be placed in areas most needed. “We will be posted mainly in Villas Otoch Paraíso and Rancho Viejo, while some military personnel will go to the Cancun Hotel Zone.”
In recent months, the presence of military personnel has been reinforced in the northern zone of Quintana Roo due to the increase in murders and other violent acts, the so-called settling of scores (revenge), related to disputes between criminal groups.
The 300 agents who arrived in Cancun Thursday join the 4,000 military personnel from the Army, Navy and National Guard who are already here.
