Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — A Cancun tourist sailing on a catamaran died Saturday in Isla Mujeres waters. The tourist, who is alleged to have died from respiratory failure, is reported to be a 48-year-old American woman from Texas.
She was part of a day long catamaran snorkeling expedition and tour that had left the Cancun Hotel Zone that morning. Medical intervention was requested by the catamaran captain around 12:30 p.m. when the woman began to have breathing problems.
The boat made an emergency detour to Isla Mujeres were it docked at Perla Negra. Personnel from Civil Protection met the vessel and tried to revive the woman who, according to local reports, was suffering from convulsions, however, she did not respond to their attempts.
She was confirmed dead by medical personnel from a responding ambulance. Police cordoned off the scene and the Prosecutor’s Office was notified. An autopsy will confirm the official cause of death.
