Afternoon accident creates long line of frustrated Cancun Hotel Zone drivers

Cancun, Q.R. — A Sunday afternoon accident in the Cancun Hotel Zone created a long line of frustrated drivers. Cancun Transit was called to kilometer 2.5 of Kukulcán Boulevard after a bus driver slammed into a palm tree.

The driver of the bus sideswiped a car before hitting the tree, which was in the roadway median, leaving an entire lane blocked. The accident happened around 2:30 p.m. during heavy traffic.

According to available information, a mechanical failure caused the driver to lose control of the bus. Traffic was at a standstill in both directions for more than half an hour while teams removed the vehicle from the median strip.

Traffic officers and military personnel were charged with regulating traffic in the area.

The palm tree left a section of the driver’s side windshield shattered along with damage to the front bumper. Two people, passengers on the bus, were reported slightly injured in the afternoon mishap. Tow trucks eventually arrived to remove both the bus and private car involved.
