Yucatan man arrested after claiming Tulum cenote as his own

Tulum, Q. R. — A man who had taken over a municipal owned cenote as his own has been arrested. Tulum Municipal Police were sent to the property in Aldea Zamá Wednesday where they found a man charging 50 pesos (Fifti pesos per person) to enter. A woman, also at the entrance, was selling food to cenote users.

The Chivero cenote has belonged to the municipality of Tulum since 2018. The man who claimed it as his own was not only squatting, he was also operating a business without a municipal license.

It was a private tip that lead police to the site where they found 34-year-old Manual “N” from Valladolid, Yucatán. He was arrested and removed from the property.
