Woman shot dead on Tulum hotel beach in targeted attack

Tulum, Q.R. — Authorities have started an investigation into the broad daylight shooting of a woman on a Tulum beach. The woman, of Mexican nationality, was shot and killed on a beach outside a Tulum hotel Thursday afternoon.

Authorities say the targeted shooting was drug-related. Tulum’s newly implemented Executive Police were reported first on scene. According to early information, the woman was targeted in the Ahau Hotel’s beach area.

Witnesses reported hearing at least five gun shots before her attackers fled in an unknown direction, taking advantage of the chaos. When they next looked, they saw a woman laying in the sand. She died before paramedics arrived.

Municipal Police and National Guard cordoned off the area and evacuated part of the beach. Authorities have not named the woman killed, but did release a brief statement saying they are investigating the targeted attack which they attribute to drug trafficking.

“The Quintana Roo Attorney General’s Office (FGE) reports the opening of an investigation into the crime of aggravated homicide against a Mexican female, which occurred in the beach area of the municipality of Tulum.

“Initial investigations by this Social Representation indicate that the motive for this incident was related to drug trafficking crimes.
