Urban Development inspectors shut down illegal project on Bacalar lagoon shore

Bacalar, Q.R. — A construction project on a shore of the Bacalar lagoon was closed down Friday. Personnel from the Bacalar Department of Urban Development, Ecology and Environment closed the project for lack of permits.

Municipal inspectors paid a visit to the site after citizen complaints and questions regarding the required permits to build on the lagoon shore. Once there, authorities verified the illegal construction due to a lack of permits.

Bacalar Mayor José Alfredo Contreras Méndez confirmed the project has been shut down, saying no one is above the law.

“At the Honorable Bacalar City Council, we maintain a firm and vigorous stance against all construction projects that represent irregularities and lack the necessary permits.

“We stand on the side of the people and act to ensure order, safety and responsible urban development in our municipality. No one is above the law.

“We will not allow the laws to be violated or the regulations that protect the well-being of the people of Bacalar to be ignored. Compliance with the rules is everyone’s responsibility and enforcing them is our commitment. We respond to citizen complaints!” he said.

Contreras Méndez did not say what the construction project was or if fines will be imposed or a teardown requested.
