Two workers injured after Maya Train construction collapse

Othón P. Blanco, Q.R. — Two construction workers were injured Monday evening on a Maya Train site. One worker was taken to hospital with a shattered leg, while the other was treated for a pelvic injury.

An ambulance was requested shortly after 6:00 p.m. after the men were left partially pinned under a section of collapsed rebar. Coworkers tried desperately to free them by prying the metals bars upward, but were unable to make the necessary movement.

A crane was used to remove the mound of fallen rebar from on top of the two workers who were then transferred to hospital.

The accident happened along section 6 in an area approximately 20 kilometers south of Chetumal. A large metal structure, that was the base for a bridge pillar, collapsed and fell on the two workers as they tried to flee. Both men remain in Chetumal hospital.
