Two missing kayakers found dead at Tulum lagoon

Tulum, Q.R. — Two national tourists who were reported missing Thursday evening have been found deceased by Tulum officials.

Tulum Fire and Civil Protection personnel began searching for the pair at 6:30 a.m. Friday, after they were reported missing. The pair were kayaking on the 20 kilometer-long laguna Nopalitos with friends but failed to emerge by the end of the day. They were reported missing around 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening.

Members of Bomberos and Protección Civil de Tulum reported finding the missing tourists deceased at the lagoon Friday morning using drones. According to preliminary information, Martín and José Arjona, along with two other friends, Jhony Gómez and Rodrigo López, entered laguna Nopalitos for a day of kayaking, but did not show up to leave the lagoon as planned.

The other two kayakers left the lagoon, but without their comrades. The bodies of the two men were found Friday by emergency personnel. The two deceased are Martín and José Arjona, both from Mexico. They are presumed to have drowned, however, an official autopsy is scheduled.
