Two drown off a Tulum beach after being overwhelmed by waves

Tulum, Q.R. — Two people reportedly drowned off a beach in Tulum Tuesday after being overwhelmed by strong currents and high waves. According to preliminary information, a 33-year-old adult and a 15-year-old minor drowned at kilometer 8 in the Tulum Hotel Zone.

Paramedics responded to the call for assistance Tuesday afternoon in the Punta Piedra area. When they arrived, they located two unresponsive males. Pronounced on scene was 33-year-old Juan N and a minor, 15-year-old Kevin N. Both were area visitors from Mexico City.

Witnesses told authorities that the pair had been swept out to sea by the strong currents. Once they were out, high waves created more difficulty in their attempts to swim back to shore.

Lifeguards were able to swim out and bring them back, however, both were consciousness and failed to respond to first aid. They were pronounced on scene by responding paramedics.
