Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Two children died in their home over the weekend from smoke inhalation after the palapa of their house caught fire.
The fire occurred in the residential area of Luis Donaldo Colosio. Municipal police, along with firemen, arrived on scene to find two children, aged 3 and 6, deceased in the same bed.
According to preliminary reports, the fire started in the home’s palapa and quickly became out of control, spreading to nearby houses. Paramedics arrived only to pronounce both children.
Commander Jorge Robles Aguilar reported that one woman, 36-year-old Angélica N from the state of Chiapas, was taken into custody for leaving the children unsupervised inside the home. She was transferred to the State Attorney General’s Office for the corresponding legal purposes.
The police of Quintana Roo, Civil Protection and the State General Prosecutor’s Office continue to investigate.
