Tulum taxi driver shot dead while driving along highway

Tulum, Q.R. — UPDATED: A Tulum taxi driver was shot dead Sunday while driving a passenger transport van. The incident was recorded along the Chemuyil-Akumal section of highway when a vehicle pulled up along side of the van and began shooting at the driver, hitting him twice about the neck and head.

The van ended up in the ditch in the middle of the highway where it came to a stop along the concrete meridian. The driver, who was from the Tiburones del Caribe Taxi Union, died on scene. There are unconfirmed reports that passengers inside the van witnessed the shooting.

The deceased has been identified as 38-year-old Manuel A.D. He had only recently joined the Tulum union as a taxi driver.

UPDATE: On Monday, state prosecutor Oscar Montes de Oca Rosales confirmed the shooting death of a taxi operator that was transporting tourists. The accident occurred along the Tulum-Playa del Carmen highway between the towns of Chemuyil-Akumal. The tourists were not injured.

“Unfortunately, these people do not think of hurting the lives of others or the damage that is done caused to the image of the state and that is very unfortunate,” he said in a public interview.
