Tulum taxi driver killed in head on highway crash

Tulum, Q.R. — A Tulum taxi driver was killed Saturday in a head-on highway crash that also left two people injured. The accident happened Saturday morning around 10:30 a.m. when a pickup and taxi collided at highway speed.

The taxi was pushed deep into the brush and had to be cut out in order to be towed. A machete was used to cut the car free from the tangled brush where it came to a stop. Nearby was the body of the driver.

The unnamed taxi driver was ejected from the car and was found laying face-up in brush a few meters to the passenger’s side of his cab.

Two people from inside the pickup truck were rushed to hospital. The impact caused a section of the front tire of the pickup to break free from the vehicle.

Personnel from the Municipal Police and Transit of Tulum cordoned off the scene. It is believed the taxi driver blew a tire while traveling the highway which caused him to swerve into the oncoming truck.

Police continue with their investigation into the official cause of the fatal accident.
