Tulum security guard, taxi driver arrested after hotel guest calls police

Tulum, Q.R. — A security guard and taxi driver were arrested after the guard attempted to empty a hotel safe.

The security guard, identified as Sandy Rogelio N., was taken into custody after his failed attempt to steal the contents of the hotel safe he worked for. Police were called to Hotel 6 on Andromeda Oriente Street in Tulum after a hotel guest called for help.

The guest alerted police after hearing a noise and, when they looked, saw the security guard hitting the safe with a fire extinguisher.

When Municipal Police arrived, the same security guard met them at the gate. When police explained the reason they were there, the guard became evasive and refused them entry. Outranking him, police entered the hotel and found the damaged safe not yet opened.

Upon questioning, the security guard said he was forced to steal the contents of the safe, that he was being extorted, explaining that outside the hotel was the taxi driver who was extorting him for the safe’s cash.

Outside, police found a man waiting in his taxi. They proceeded to arrest 33-year-old Jorge Gabriel N. Both men are reported to be from the state of Yucatan.
