Tulum police arrest two Chetumal men after chase through coastal area

Tulum, Q.R. — Police in the town of Tulum intercepted a vehicle after the driver evaded a check stop. The pickup was cut off by authorities and arrests made on the coastal road late Sunday night.

A chase from a checkpoint on Kovak Avenue to the town’s coastal area ended with the arrest of two men, but not before police were fired upon. The white pickup was traveling with four men on board when the driver sped through the police filter.

Backup was called in and an operation to locate and intercept the truck was implemented. The vehicle was quickly located traveling the coastal road around 11:30 p.m. Shots were fired at the police units chasing the pickup by men from inside the truck.

When the pickup was finally intercepted, all four on board made a run for it. Two of the four men were captured by police. During their arrests, at least one loaded gun was seized. Two others from inside the pickup made successful escapes on foot.

Carlos David “N”, 25 from Chetumal and Denis Rafael N, 28, also from Chetumal, were taken into custody by Tulum officers Sunday night.

According to the police report, two others from inside the truck managed to flee by running into the woods along with the firearms they were carrying. Security forces conducted foot patrols to try to locate the two man and/or their weapons, but they did not locate them.

Authorities have not provided any information on why the driver evaded the police check stop of if the two men in custody are members of a criminal group.
