Tulum officer videoed assaulting citizen resigns to avoid internal investigation

Tulum, Q.R. — A Tulum police officer videoed physically assaulting a citizen has reportedly resigned. Gilberto “N”, the Municipal Preventive Police officer in question, resigned from the corporation after being videoed punching a man during an alleged arrest.

The video was recorded by a Tulum citizen last Thursday night who watched as the officer physically assaulted the citizen, punching him in the ribs and roughing him up. The seated man is seen barely fighting back.

Now-former colleagues of the officer, who did not want to be named, said Gilberto “N” chose to resign to avoid facing a disciplinary process before the Council of Honor and Justice, the body in charge of police officer conduct.

The incident happened on the night of December 19 when the citizen, a man sitting in a public space, was reportedly intoxicated and attempted to resist arrest.

It is not known if the resignation of the officer will cancel out the corresponding internal investigation that is normally conducted. Local authorities on neither a municipal or state level have commented on the incident or the viral video.
