Tulum, Q.R. — At least 10 homes were burned Monday after a fast moving fire. According to the Tulum Fire Department, the initial fire began inside a house along Kukulcán Avenue in 2 de Octubre of Tulum around 2:00 p.m.
The modest homes, which were constructed with sheets of wood, were completely destroyed since the flames were fueled by gusty winds.
Area residents used garden hoses and buckets to try and put out the fires, but the low water pressure and the strong winds did not work in their favor. It took Tulum firemen more than an hour and a half to finally put out the blaze.
Manuel Castilla Jaimes, Director of the Tulum Fire Department, reported that the cause of the fire is unknown, and that at the end of the day, 10 houses and a two-story hotel burned. The fire spread more than 200 meters due to the strong winds.
