Tulum, Q.R. — UPDATED: A Tulum cyclist was killed Tuesday morning after being struck by a semi. Police were called to the scene on Okoot Avenue around 7:30 a.m. where they located a deceased woman.
The driver of the semi dump truck was at an intersection heading to the Ejidal neighborhood when the accident happened. According to witnesses, the woman stopped next to the dump truck on her bicycle during a red light.
When the light turned green, the semi began to move at which time she was run over by the large unit. Paramedics arrived and pronounced her dead at the scene.
The driver of the semi is reported to have fled the scene, however, witnesses to the accident held him until police arrived at which time he was arrested. The driver of the truck has not been identified. The deceased woman has been identified as Delinda “M”, a Tulum resident originally from Tabasco.
UPDATE: A candlelight vigil was held at the accident site Tuesday evening by the Mexican Bicycle Embassy of Tulum in remembrance of Delinda “M”. During the ceremony, voices were raised demanding that authorities provide safer road infrastructure for cyclists, as well as the implementation of restrictions on trucks that frequently ignore basic safety standards.
