Tulum brigades continue to battle days-old forest fire

Tulum, Q.R. — Forest firefighters of Tulum continue to battle the El Travieso fire. The fire was reported to authorities early Wednesday morning. By Thursday morning it had grown to 23 hectares and was only 10 percent contained.

According to Protección Civil de Tulum, the fire is located north of the community of San Juan de Dios, which is approximately 57 kilometers from the town of Tulum.

Brigades from Civil Protection, Conafor, the National Forestry Commission of Mexico and the Forest Protection Brigade of the Mayan area, began their battle with a total of 13 forest firefighters.

The agency says that work will continue to contain the advances with firebreaks and thus have less impact on the area.
